12-hour bandh begins

By: Tamil Nadu News

Almost all shops and commercial establishments in the city downed shutters today in response to the call for a dawn-to dusk bandh given by political parties, social and trade organisations, protesting the "attitude" of Kerala on creation of Salem Railway Division.

Buses, including State-owned ones, taxis, autorickshaws, tempos and vans were off the roads to express solidarity to the demand that all Tamil Nadu areas be included in the division, bifurcated from the Palakkad Division.

Adequate number of police force has been deployed in and around the city, police said, adding no (no) untoward incident was reported.

Private schools have voluntarily declared holiday.

Major political parties, including DMK, AIADMK, MDMK, PMK, CPI, Periyar Dravida Kazhakam, and various trade and vehicle owners associations have supported the 12-hour bandh.
