Karnataka would shortly declare 15 more taluks as drought hit taking the number of taluks brought under the tag to 117, Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar said today. According to reports compiled by revenue authorities, scarcity conditions had been prevailing in 15 more taluks due to failure of rains,necessitating the government intervention to launch relief works for the affected people, he told reporters here. The matter would be placed before the cabinet for approval to declare these taluks as drought hit, he said. The state two weeks ago, declared 102 taluks as drought affected. The Centre has released Rs 250 crore financial assistance for the state to implement relief operations in flood and drought batterred areas, but was yet to allot two lakh tonnes of foodgrains, he said. The state has pleaded with the Centre for three lakh tonnes of foodgrains, he said. Some of the textile units and cooperative societies in Hubli-Dharwad have failed to repay loans secured by the Karnataka Central Cooperative Bank and action was being taken to recover the loans outstanding by auctioning properties belonging to defaulting cooperatives. Some of the cooperatives which have defaulted are headed by politicians, he said, but refused to divulge names.
