A batch of 53 Sri Lankan refugees arrived here in two boats early this morning. The refugees, members of 17 families from Mannar, Vavuniya, Pesalai and Trincomallee in the island nation, were sent to Mandapam transit camp after being screened by the 'Q' branch of Tamil Nadu police, officials said. The refugees reportedly paid Rs 7,000 per person to be ferried to India in the fibreglass boats. According to the refugees, the Sri Lankan Army has launched attacks on rebel bases and is advancing on all fronts. Many Tamils were starving in jungles, they said. Most houses in their areas have been razed by bombing and people are living in the open, the refugees told officials. Meanwhile, the Crime Branch arrested three Sri Lankan ferry operators at the Pamban Naduthurai coast. According to officials, the operators were planning to take back 14 refugees who had escaped from a camp. A search was on to trace the refugees who were hiding in a casurina jungle between Dhanushkodi and Ramar Patham, they said.
