Art Found in Words and Everyday Objects Inspire Exhibition on Display at the Addison Gallery

By: Arts & Entertainment News

Phillips Academy alumna and Edward E. Elson artist-in-residence at the Addison Gallery of American Art, Angela Lorenz, returns to her alma matter with a fall exhibition, titled “Angela Lorenz: The Artist’s Book as a Volume of Knowledge”. The works of Lorenz, who grew up in Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA and now resides in Bologna, Italy, are currently being showcased at the museum through December 30, 2007.

From blocks of ice to latex to chewing gum, Lorenz crafts limited-edition artist’s books out of an astounding array of materials. Even more surprising is the amount of knowledge she manages to pack into each of her intimate volumes. A collector of words and everyday objects, Lorenz draws upon her fascination with reality and history by diligently taking notes and photographs, listening to the stories of those around her, and conducting painstaking research. Lorenz often describes herself as a collector: “As I walk, I pick up playing cards, buttons, keys, negatives, messages, and puzzle pieces. I photograph socks, weeds, signs, posters, partially exposed buildings and objects or materials being used in ways for which they were not intended.” Documenting the ways in which cultures both ancient and modern have used information and language over time, Lorenz’s books often underline humorous and ironic aspects of what are sometimes bleak cultural phenomena.

As the works in her exhibition at the Addison reveal, any phenomena or object—whether it is a children’s board game, a museum wall label, or the life of an obscure seventeenth-century poet—can spark Lorenz’s interest and become the focus of intense investigation. Her path of inquiry is filled with many twists and turns as she seeks all possible variations surrounding an idea or fact. This methodology often leads to unexpected discoveries, bizarre associations, and ultimately evocative and illuminating works of art. By merging a conceptual approach with exquisite craftsmanship, her work conveys ideas that are witty, symbolic and evocative.

The Lorenz exhibition is one of five exhibitions currently on display at the Addison ranging from the historic (Ipswich Days: Arthur Wesley Dow and his Hometown) to the contemporary (Lorenz and Class Pictures: Photographs by Dawoud Bey).
