A fresh flood alert has been sounded in five districts of Central Gujarat, including Vadodra after a large quantity of waters were released from various dams on Friday night. According to sources, parts of Gujarat have started flooding following release of water from three dams Kadana, Vanakbori and Panam dams. Also, 100,000 cusecs of water was released from Dharoi dam to prevent it from bursting its banks on Friday. Ahmedabad, Vadodra, Godhra, Anand and Kheda districts have been put on alert and fire brigade personnel are evacuating people from low-lying areas, officials said. People living on the banks of rivers and in low-lying areas in Ahmedabad were asked to move to safer grounds. Authorities said the release of water would have an impact on the region, and all efforts were being made to tackle the situation. “The water that has been let out will have an impact... the water is being let out from the Vasna barrage. The impact will be there for at least 7-8 hours...evacuation is on in the low-lying areas...they (people) have to be kept away from the place,” said I.P. Gautam, Municipal Commissioner of Ahmedabad. District officials said the civic bodies were worried about slum-dwellers who refused to leave their homes. “People refuse to leave the slums, which is a problem. We have managed 75 percent evacuation, but about 10-15 families simply refuse to leave. We are worried about them though they claim that they'll be all right. Their houses may not be solid enough to withstand this,” D. Thara, district collector, said. Authorities have cautioned people in an around Ahmedabad against the rising level of water in the Sabarmati river. Meanwhile, residents of flood-ravaged Surat have started cleaning their houses to avoid the spread of water-borne disease, after floodwaters receded in the area. Millions across Gujarat were stranded for days without food and water in flooded homes or atop rooftops. About 200 villages were cut off and two main cities, Vadodara and Surat, were severely inundated with even large trucks being barely seen through the water. The week-long flooding triggered by annual monsoon rains has killed more than 350 people and made more than 4 million homeless across Maharashrta, Orissa, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh.
