In a face-saving move, Chhattisgarh's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government plans to approach the high court against arrest warrants issued against 60 BJP leaders, including Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and three state ministers. The Chhattisgarh government said Monday it would file petitions in the High Court to withdraw the cases against the BJP leaders issued by a local court on Saturday in a case related to protests led by them against the then Congress government in 2001. While seven of them, including Industry Minister Rajesh Munat, have been issued non-bailable warrants, the others including Chouhan, Finance Minister Amar Agarwal and Panchayat and Higher Education Minister Ajay Chandrakar have been issued bailable warrants. "The government will soon file petitions in the high court to withdraw the cases in public interest. The 2001 case is not a criminal case, it was politically motivated and leaders facing arrest warrants do not need to resign," state Chief Minister Raman Singh told reporters here. Chouhan had led the agitation on April 28, 2001, against the then Congress government headed by Ajit Jogi, when he was the president of BJP's youth wing - Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). Chhattisgarh filed a petition before the local court on Saturday seeking to withdraw the cases against the BJP leaders, but the court rejected the petition. "The decision to move the high court is aimed to avoid embarrassment to the BJP as pressure is mounting on Chouhan and the other senior leaders of Chhattisgarh facing arrest warrants to resign," Congress spokesman Ramesh Varlyani said. The BJP said Saturday that the 2001 protest organised by the BJYM was a political programme.
