Millions of people in Orissa began the New Year Monday on a propitious note by visiting temples across the state. Devotees started thronging the famous Jagannath temple in Puri, 56 km from here, from 4 a.m. itself. By 7 a.m., the numbers had crossed 100,000, said a senior district police official. "We expect it to cross 400,000 by evening." Other temples in the state like the Samaleswari temple at Sambalpur, Lingaraj temple in Bhubaneswar and the Chandi temple at Cuttack as well as smaller shrines in villages and towns also witnessed huge crowds. "We visit temples at the beginning of every year to pray for a peaceful and happy new year," said Ratnakar Moharana, one of those queuing up to enter the Lingaraj temple here.
