Don't oppose check dam across Palar: Expert panel member

By: Tamil Nadu News

Opposing the construction of a check dam across river Palar in Andhra Pradesh that could only hold two TMC of water would not benefit Tamil Nadu, member of the Expert Committee on Interlinking of Rivers A C Kamaraj today said.

In a statement here, he said Andhra Pradesh had agreed to give 15 TMC of water for meeting the drinking water requirement of Chennai. "We have to request for this water. Now is it wise to oppose construction of a small check dam that could hold only 2 TMC of water?" he asked.

He said Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was pressing for linking of the rivers and the Centre also was keen to link the rivers in the southern peninsula in the first phase, which would benefit both the states.

The linking of rivers would help divert 3,000 TMC of water from Godavari which could be used for the benefit of both Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, he said.

Kamaraj said he was holding talks with the Andhra Pradesh Government and they were also ready to accept the river-linking scheme.

He suggested that an amicable solution be found through high-level talks and Tamil Nadu should not resort to any "collision course."
