Farmers demand water gauging station

By: Tamil Nadu News

The Tamil Nadu Cauvery Delta Farmer's Welfare Association has demanded installation of a water gauging station at Billigundu for monitoring the water released from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu.

The Association at its meeting here yesterday, said since the farmers in the past had not accepted the quantum of water released from Karnataka, a water gauging station of international standards should be opened for proper monitoring of water release, association source said today.

The meeting, chaired by the association president G Kanagasabai, also decided to offer its assistance to the state government in filing the review petition before the tribunal and also to point out the short comings in the award.

The meeting said the award was silent on flow of water during summer, essential for cash crops. This could affect the sugarcane and banana crops between Mettur reservoir and the Grand anaicut from January 28 to June 12.

It also wanted the government to take up cauvery modernisation programme so that there would not be wastage of water. There should be a legal framework for sharing the water during the distress period, the sources said.

Though award was not satisfactory, it offered a compromise solution in view of the shortage of water in the cauvery basin, the association said.
