Five members of a family, including a woman, lost their lives after they went into an abandoned well to rescue a man who had gone in to save baby pigeons that had fallen into it. According to police, all the five died of suffocation Wednesday afternoon in Zalabordi village in Umreth block of Anand district, 80 km from here, when they entered into a dried up well one after the other. "The five died due to asphyxiation, possibly caused by the presence of gases trapped in the abandoned well. Forensic investigators have been called to the spot to tell us what exactly caused the deaths inside the well," said A.K. Sharma, deputy inspector general of police, Ahmedabad range. According to the sequence of events, 48-year-old Pratapsinh Chauhan saw baby pigeons fall into a 25-feet-deep dried well. He went down to save the birds and fainted inside due to the poisonous gases. In order to save Chauhan, five people belonging to a family entered the pit and died of asphyxiation. Shana Parmar (65) and Khiman Parmar (70) went into the well to bring out Chauhan and when they didn't turn up, Natwar Parmar (33), Gita Parmar (32) and Shankar Parmar (25) also went in. Villagers managed to get all six people out. They were in an unconscious condition and immediately rushed to hospital. They died later, and Chauhan, admitted to a private Nadiad hospital, is reported to be in critical condition. Meanwhile, police and a forensic experts' team has reached the spot and cordoned off the well. They are investigating the matter.
