Govt to take final decision on Greater Bangalore

By: India News

Karnataka government today said it would take a final decision on creation of 'Greater Bangalore' by merging seven City Municipal Councils and a town panchayat with Bangalore City Corporation by November one.

The cabinet sub-committee chaired by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy here today set up an official committee to study whether it would be administratively viable to set up the 'Greater Bangalore Authority' to govern the new areas along those under the city corporation or set up two separate corporations.

Speaking to reporters, Kumaraswamy said the official committee would submit its report in about three days and the cabinet sub-committee would meet in a fortnight to take a decision.

In the event of the state establishing the Greater Bangalore Authority, which was being contemplated for more than a decade, 230 sq kms of land would be added to the existing 696 sq kms under the corporation in order to upgrade infrastructure of the city and the suburbs.

The government has issued a notification seeking public opinion on the creation of Greater Bangalore, Kumaraswamy said.

In the backdrop of this decision, the elections to City Corporation due this November, might be postponed as the process of delimitation of wards has to be completed for holding polls.

The Bangalore Metropolitan Development Authority has launched a survey on setting up satellite township, Kumaraswamy said.
