The Karnataka government will launch a new programme named Aasare (support) next month for the economic empowerment of unemployedand destitute women, Women and Child Welfare Minister H K Kumaraswamy said today. Under the programme, women including divorcees will begiven loans ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs two lakh for starting self-employment ventures in embroidery, tailoring and cottage industries, he told a press conference here. The government will grant Rs 10,000 as subsidy to the women. It plans to identify 50 beneficiaries in each of the 27 districts in the first phase, he said. A total of 1.6 lakh girls born into BPL families have been identified under the Bhagalakshmi Insurance scheme and 70,000 of them have furnished required documents to get the benefits. Insurance bonds will be given to parents of girlscovered by the scheme by the end of next month, Kuamraswamy said. Under the scheme that aims to check female foeticide, Rs 10,000 will be deposited in the name of each girl and the amount would be paid to her when she attains the age of maturity, he said.
