Mamata on warpath against acquisition of farmland for Tata auto unit

By: Kolkata News

Activists of the Trinamool Congress on Tuesday brought traffic in Kolkata to a standstill, protesting against police action against their party chief Mamata Banerjee.

Activists alleged that Mamata was roughed up by police, while on a protest in Singur in Hoogly district against acquisition of farmland to set up an automobile unit by Tata Motors Ltd.

Trinamool leaders alleged, police swooped on Banerjee on the night of Monday and forcibly evicted her alongwith other party activists from the venue.

"At least two thousand police men led by one Manpreet and IG (Inspector General of Police) Banibrata Basu started humiliating Mamata. This apart, they also attacked Mamata. They started beating Mamata and at least 200 of our female members were brutality injured and ultimately they wanted to throw Mamata back to Kolkata. We have accepted the challenge now the blockage has started. Blockage would be going on," said Madan Mitra, Trinamool Congress leader.

Enraged by the treatment meted out to their leader, Trinamool Party activists blocked road and rail traffic for an hour in the forenoon on Tuesday. Mamata also went on a hunger strike here.

Meanwhile, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi condemned the West Bengals government's action and termed it as brutal.

"The operation is Singur is most shameful. It appears and it shows that something is there, which is under the carpet, and which the government is desperate to cover," said Dasmunshi after meeting Banerjee.

Mamata has called for a day-long shutdown in West Bengal on October 9, just after the Durga Puja festival.

Tata Motors Ltd. had firmed up plans to set up a 2000-crore rupee (20 billion rupee) auto ancillary unit in Singur. But the locals have been vociferously protesting the acquisition of farmland for the project.

Banerjee, whose Trinamool Congress is in the opposition, has lend her support to the farmers' cause.
