A festive atmosphere enveloped Mumbai Wednesday as people braved intermittent showers to bid farewell to idols of the Hindu god Ganesha with customary fervour, ending the 10-day-long Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations. Additional security was in place across the city and there were traffic restrictions on major roads for the occasion. "Ganpati bappa morea! Aagle barash jaldhi aana" (Hail Lord Ganesh! Come early next year) rented the air on the city's roads as thousands of devotees and onlookers thronged the main thoroughfares, lanes and by-lanes to have a last glimpse of the elephant god Ganesha. Playing trumpets, cymbals, bass drums and flutes, and dancing to tunes of popular Bollywood numbers, youngsters and festival organisers proceeded on their way to the city's immersion points along the beaches stretching from south Mumbai to the northwestern suburbs. Trading and commercial activities in the country's financial and entertainment hub came to a standstill as long serpentine queues of trucks and smaller transport vehicles carrying the idols inched their way to the main immersion points Girgaum, Dadar Chowpatty, Bandra, Juhu and Powai. The Mumbai Police, not wanting to take any chances in the aftermath of the July 11 serial bombings, put in place additional security. Close circuit colour televisions were installed and mobile vans fitted with cameras were on patrol on the city roads. Bomb detection squads were also pressed into action.
