No notification for land acquisition at Nandigram: government

The West Bengal government today said no notification for acquisition of land at Nandigram in East Midnapore has been issued and a rumour about this that was deliberately spread had sparked off violence in the area.

"A rumour was spread deliberately at Nandigram. The government has not issued any notification regarding land acquisition for any project there," state Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Roy told reporters at the state secretariat.

Police, he said, were investigating the matter and the government would take steps after receiving their report.

To a question, he said it was not clear whether any firing had occurred during a clash yesterday between police and protestors at Nandigram. "The whole thing is not yet clear. Nothing can be said without receiving the police's investigation report," he said.

To another query, Roy said prohibitory orders under section 144 of CrPC have not been imposed at Nandigram.
