The Chhattisgarh government has purchased over 22 lakh tonnes of paddy from the farmers of the state with minimum support price, official sources said today. Through its 1,519 procurement centres, the state government had purchased 22,67,848 tonnes paddy so far in the minimum support price, the sources said. Out of the procured paddy, taking steps for its speedy disposal the state government had already alloted 15,05,711 tonnes paddy to the Food Corporation of India and various rice mills as their quota or for converting that as rice. Since stocking of paddy was a risky factor in the wake of rainfall and other chances of damage, the state government decided to allot the paddy to FCI and the millers to minimise losses in the procurement, they said. Among the procured paddy, Raipur district was at the top with purchase of 6,14,561 tonnes from farmers and the flow of paddy was still continuing, the sources said. Since 80 per cent of the population of the state are dependent on agriculture and paddy was the main crop of the state, the state government had decided to purchase paddy from the farmers through its primary cooperative societies.
