Package for suicide-prone districts of South India this month

By: Bangalore News

The Centre is likely to announce a "big package" for 31 farmers' suicide-prone districts of South India this month, Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh said today.

Sixteen districts in Andhra Pradesh, six each in Karnataka and Maharashtra and three in Kerala are covered under the package, which involves loan rescheduling, interest rate reduction, agriculture credit, irrigation and livestock development, Jairam Ramesh told reporters here.

"It's a big, substantial growth and financial relief package," he said, adding, the package, which also contains a financial and rescheduling one for the coffee industry, is expected to be announced after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's return from the foreign tour.

Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi has already discussed the issue with the Prime Minister, who had meetings with Pradesh Congress Committee chiefs of these four states, who have been assured by Singh that a package was being worked out, he said.

"We are hoping that by this month end, the package will be announced," he said. "Most of the hit (financial burden) will be taken by the Centre." The six districts in Karnataka covered under the package are: Belgaum, Chitradurga and Shimoga, and the coffee-growing ones of Chikmagalur, Hassan and Kodagu, said the Minister, who hails from Chikmagalur.
