Protests in Jammu and Kashmir over Saddam execution after Eid prayers

The execution of ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein evoked a belated response in Kashmir as protests were held today after the Eid-ul-Zuha prayers across the valley. Immediately after the eid prayers, the people raised slogans against the US and its president George W Bush to protest the execution of Saddam on Saturday.

Around 200 youth gathered outside the Jamia Mosque, the stronghold of moderate faction of Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, and burnt US flags. They also raised slogans against Bush and the US.

Jamiat-e-Ahli Hadees also staged a protest demonstration from Polo ground.

Similar protests were reported from Qazigund, Anantnag, Baramulla, Sopore, Kupwara, Pulwama and as far a Karnah townships of the valley, officials said.

All protests were peaceful and there was no untoward incident reported from anywhere during these demonstrations, they added.

Special prayers were also held in memory of Saddam at almost all mosques.
