Over 600 people were evacuated from low-lying areas of Surat city today after the water levels in river Tapti began to rise, district administration sources said here. Water level in Tapti today rose after thousands of cusecs of water was released from the Ukai dam built upstream in the district. Over 600 people living in Bapunagar and surrounding areas of the city have been evacuated to safer places after the water level in Tapti rose, sources said. Though the city recorded moderate rainfall today, the authorities were forced to release water because of heavy inflow of water into the dam from Madhya Pradesh. However, the river was flowing below the danger mark, sources added.
