Shouting slogans against Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan, workers of various political parties and social organisations blocked some trains at various places in the district today as part of the 12-hour bandh on the Salem Railway Division issue. About 35 Government law college students were arrested when they blocked the Palakkad-Tiruchirapalli passenger at the city railway station this morning. Two passengers were also arrested when they pulled the alarm chain to stop the same train at Madukkarai, police said. In Tirupur, 55 activists of Periyar Dravida Kazhakam and some passengers got down and blocked the Thiruvananthapuram- Gorakhpur Express at Tirupur and courted arrest. As the train reached the city railway station, over 200 activists from PDK, DMK, AIADMK, MDMK and some trade associations marched towards it and stopped it. The workers, holding party flags, raised slogans against Achuthanandan and the 'attitude' of Southern Railway General Manager, Thomas Verghese, over the issue. Former DMK MP M Ramanathan led the workers, who raised slogans in Malayalam, saying Coimbatore and Tirupur belong to Tamils and not to Achuthanandan. They demanded to know what right he has to seek retention of the area in Palakkdad division, when the two areas belong to Tamil Nadu. PDK general secretary K Ramakrishnan, MDMK district secretary R R Mohan Kumar and DMK district leader Veeragopal, were also present during the rail roko. The creation of the new railway division, based at Salem, by bifurcating Palakkad Division, has been objected to by the Kerala government, which contends that Palakkad division would become smaller and earn them lesser revenue.
