Situation remained under control in Nandigram, which had witnessed mob violence with over a dozen policemen injured when locals objecting to the acquisition of land for Salim group's proposed special economic zone (SEZ) in East Midnapore district, clashed with police. Police also recovered the rifle allegedly snatched during the disturbances, Inspector-General of Police Raj Kanoria said here today. No arrest, however, could be made, he added. Police picket was posted at Kalicharanpur and its neighbouring villages of Nandigram bloc in the district as a precautionary measure. The violence sparked off yesterday over a reported notification of land acquisition for an SEZ by the Salim group of Indonesia. West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddhadev Bhattacharya, however, had clarified that no such notification was issued for the area. A police vehicle was set on fire, local gram panchayat office ransacked and 15 policemen were injured in brickbatting by thousands of activists of the Trinamool Congress-led Krishi Jami Bachao Committee (Save farmland Committee). The protestors also felled trees and boulders on the Nandigram-Sonachura road preventing policemen's entry into the village.
