Sri Lanka's navy said it destroyed an LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) boat and damaged another, killing at least eight insurgents off the island's eastern coast Monday. "One boat was destroyed while another boat was recovered later," said navy spokesperson D.K.P. Dassanayake. "The LTTE boats fired at the navy patrol, prompting the navy to retaliate," he said. At least eight members of the LTTE sea wing died in the attack, he added. The attack took place around 4.30 a.m. Monday (2100 GMT) at Poduwakatu area in the eastern port district of Trincomalee. The navy said some weapons had been discovered on board the damaged vessel. The sea clash came after government troops captured Vakarai, a major seat of rebel administration in the east, from LTTE control on Jan 19. Separatist violence has killed over 67,000 people in the island nation since the mid-1980s.
