A Bonsai exhibition held in Bangalore recently evoked encouraging response. Organised by Vriksha, an organisation which promotes the Japanese method of dwarfing plants, the two-day exhibition brought Bangaloreans closer to Bonsai, the renowned art of arranging plants that originated in Japan. Several dwarfed plants were displayed which attracted a large number of plant enthusiasts. President of Vriksha, Latha Rao, said that in the modern day when people have less space, species of plants can be preserved in the form of Bonsai. "Suppose, you do not have place, you can store all these genetic materials in Bonsai form. The moment you have an open ground or field, you can plant them there and they grow into giant trees. So one way of preserving species is Bonsai way," said Latha Rao. Moreover, the market demand for Bonsai plants is more in European countries, but it is yet to become more popular in India , presently confined to the elites. "In abroad, there is a big market. In America and European countries, these Bonsais sell for more than 1,000 dollars. Even there is a market in Australia and all over the world. In India, it's not so much," added Rao. Many varieties of Bonsai plants were displayed like Portula Afra, Ricus Benjamina, Golden Eye Press, Ficus Bengalensis, Ficus Micocarpa, Bogain Villea and other dwarfed plants. In Japanese, Bonsai literally means 'tray planting'. It is the art of dwarfing trees or plants and to develop them into an appealing shape by growing them in containers.
