Tamil Lankan refugees recount horror of 'Jaffna battle'

By: Sri Lanka News

The fresh batch of 378 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees reaching here recounted their horrific experiences of the ongoing battle between the Sri Lankan army and the Tamil Tigers in the Jaffna peninsula.

'We have been leading a life in utmost fear as the present situation there is very bad," said Kalai Mathi a Sri Lankan refugee who has fled from his hometown in Trincomalee.

Among the 378 refugees, 108 are children who have been horrified by the recent turn of events.

"Now the situation is completely different with the people involved in war, targeting schools with bombs," said Hemalatha a mother of 12-year-old child. She also added that the situation this time is more pathetic than what it was at earlier times.

'At present army is indulged in troubling the Tamilians that is why we had come to India to save our lives, says Chitravel, another refugee.

These refugees who have been provided a temporary shelter at a city marriage hall, also missed their hometown.

"Here we are given good food and protection but our intention is to go back to our mother land. We urge Indian government to take all measures to hold talks with the Sri Lankan government for peace in the country and send us back to our native place,' pleaded Chitravel.

The situation in the Jaffna region is very bad with bombs going off almost every second, recounts Kalai Mathi, who alleged that the Sri Lankan army was targeting particularly Tamils in the country, leaving no option for them than to flee.

"We 14 of our family member paid rupees 7000 per head to get the passage just to travel 15 kilometre from Trincomalee to Danishkoodi', lamented Pushpa Nesan.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened in and around the refugee camp as security personnel have been asked to guard the area fearing attack from LTTE.
