Three killed in police firing at Patan

By: India News

Three persons were killed in Gujarat's Patan district today when police opened fire at a stone-pelting mob during a demolition drive aimed at removing flood waters, officials said.

Three others were reportedly injured in the incident at Radhanpur town but it is unclear if they were hurt in stone pelting or the police firing.

"The incident occurred when civic officials, in an effort to remove flood waters, broke some walls. But some people of the area obstructed to this and began pelting stones," Patan's Superintent of Police B D Vaghela told PTI.

The State Reserve Police personnel stationed at the spot opened fire after the stone pelting, killing three persons, he said. The dead included two from the minority community.

Senior officials rushed to Radhanpur following the incident and are trying to maintain law and order in the area, police said.

The situation is tense but under control and security has been stepped up in the area, Vaghela said.
