Trinamool activists vandalise WBIDC office over Singur

By: Kolkata News

Continuing their party's strident campaign over Singur land acquisition, Trinamool Congress activists today vandalised the office of the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC), the nodal agency for acquiring land at Singur.

WBIDC sources said about 30 Trinamool activists, led by two women, stormed into the second floor office of WBIDC in the central business district around 3.00 PM.

''On being challenged, they unfurled party flags and shouted 'Vande Mataram' and 'We are going to Singur,'' Ashok Ghosh, one of the two security guards manning the second floor entrance, told PTI.

The attackers then ransacked the office as one of the women climbed on to a table and attempted to give a speech, he said.

They damaged computers and telephones besides taking away vital documents and papers, they said.

General secretary of WBIDC Employees Union Romol Mukherjee said eight employees were injured, three seriously, when they tried to resist the vandals.

''Attempts were also made to attack me. This enraged my colleagues and they confronted the attackers who then fled. We could, however, catch one of them and hand him over to the police,'' Mukherjee said.

DCP (Central) Ajey Ranade said one person had been taken into custody.

A PTI correspondent, who visited the premises, saw papers strewn all around the office. Several pieces of furniture were overturned, two computers and at least five telephone sets were damaged.
