"The status report was inconsistent and contradictory to the letter given by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacherjee to party chief Mamata Banerjee on December 20 when she was on hunger strike, party leader and Leader of the Opposition Partha Chatterjee told a press conference here. Citing examples, he said, the Chief Minister, in his letter on December 20 had clearly stated that the government did not acquire a single plot from unwilling farmers, which meant that he had taken the consent issue seriously. But according to the report, as of December 31 last year, the total land acquired by the government at Singur was 997.11 acres and land against which payment was made was 658 acres, which showed that farmers who held more than 300 acres had not received cheques for compensation, Chatterjee said. "Do we have to believe that farmers who had willingly given land for the project would not come forward to receive compensation cheques?" he asked. "Why has the government not been able to publish the list of farmers voluntarily handing over plots if its claim is correct that they constitute 90 per cent of landowners?" He said the government had "not obtained consent" for 462 acres out of a total of 997 acres.
